Saguaro National Park, Arizona, USA IN THE WILDERNESS
At the top of a sky island | ver wake up on a fine sunny morning, fill up your water bottles, pack a few granola bottles, and head for the trails for a peaceful hike in the woods? Ever think to yourself how wonderful it really is that we've set aside some (although not enough, according to some) space for open space preserves, state, and national parks? Ever wonder how those trails get created and maintained for the enjoyment of hikers, backpackers, and pack horses? With long hard days of pure physical labor.
Last week I embarked on a completely different journey than my usual travels. I had heard about volunteer vacations abroad - namely providing heath care assistance in small villages, but there is a plethora of volunteer opportunities right here in the U.S. So I signed up with an organization called Wilderness Volunteers to do trail maintenance work for a week in Saguaro National Park outside of Tucson, AZ.
